The Steampipe is an 8-voice polyphonic synthesizer, but it has no conventional oscillators. Instead, it mimics the way sound is created in wind and string instruments and it is fine-tuned to create a wide range of sounds. The Steampipe is optimized for performance with wind MIDI controllers and it works great with any MIDI keyboard. The overtones the Steampipe produces are very organic and rich. It also comes with great-sounding presets.
The Steampipe is quite versatile and allows for nuanced sonic exploration, conjuring sonic imagery ranging from from wisps of cloud to fairground band organs, then to industrial horns of the railroad and finally, to massive, otherworldly ambiences. Due to detailed controls over multiple physical modeling parameters, the Steampipe is capable of generating very organic emulations of real instruments, but it goes well beyond the conventional pitch and dynamic ranges they can produce – imagine how a flute or clarinet would sound in C1 or C7!

MPE doesn't work correctly with my controllerSince the Steampipe only uses 8 voices, make sure your MPE controller is configured to only use 8 MPE channels, not 16. On the Steampipe, in the MIDI device menu, you should set A to 74 CC and B to poly. Leave C and D on zero.

I want to save custom presets without overriding the factory presets, but I don't see any of the 192 empty user preset slots in the list? The empty slots are not indicated, but once a preset is saved, it will be added to the end of the list. You can either start from scratch by pressing and holding the left encoder and pressing the right encoder - the preset number will invert colour and the selected preset will be unloaded, giving you full manual control over the parameters or you can load a preset, edit it and save it that way. Either way, once you are happy with a sound and want to save it, press the right encoder to go to the preset menu, then press the left encoder to enter it - you will then see the option to either SAVE or SAVE AS. In your case, select SAVE AS and change the name to whatever you desire and save it - it will be added to the end of the preset list. You can sort the presets, meaning you can move your preset to anywhere in the list as desired. This is all described in more detail on pages 10 -11 of the user manual.
